Handbook of Greek Literature in Antiquity Vol. III, part 1

Bernhard Zimmermann Antonios Rengakos

This long-awaited book covers six hundred years in Greek literary history and provides a comprehensive picture of current research into pagan literature from the time of Augustus to the fifth and sixth centuries. Opening with an introductory portrait of the whole era a major overview follows of poetry, philosophy, specialist literature, historiography, biography and autobiography, prose, fables and drama.

As in the two earlier handbooks in the same series, authors appear in literary historical order with a report on the content of their work and an indication of how it was received. Different poetic forms and the finest literary aspects are highlighted and readably thrown into relief. A major feature is the scrutiny of philosophical literature and specialist writing and an examination of how the authors successfully created their work.
