GROWING UP GETTY

James Reginato

The Story of America's Most Unconventional Dynasty

An enthralling and comprehensive look into the contemporary state of one of the wealthiest--and least understood--family dynasties in the world, perfect for fans of HBO's Succession.
GROWING UP GETTY is a comprehensive family biography of one of America's most notable and unusual clans, with particular focus on the members and happenings of the staggeringly wealthy family in the 21st century. Oil magnate J. Paul Getty, known to be the richest man in the world in his day, has a colorful cast of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Some have been highly successful, such as grandson Mark, founder of Getty Images. Others have been brought low by drug addiction, mental illness, and sibling rivalry. But all are spectacularly rich, thanks to their access to the robust Getty Trust.

Now, a new generation of lively, even outrageous Gettys are emerging, including Nats, who is trans, non-binary, and married to trans internet icon Gigi Gorgeous; his brother August, who is gay, and whose clothing line has been worn by Cher, Katy Perry, Miranda Kerr, Kirsten Bell, and Rachel McAdams; Tara whose philanthropic projects in Africa support the development of environmentally sustainable communities, and who protects critically endangered species such as black rhinos at his Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa; Balthazar, a multi-hyphenate L.A.-based actor, producer, director, DJ, musician, artist, and fashion designer; and Isabel, a singer-songwriter who has released EPs under the name Izzy Getty, and with her band, Jean Marlow.

Through extensive research and new interviews with family members, Growing Up Getty provides a behind-the-scenes look into what it's like to be a member of this ultra-wealthy group in the 21st century. James Reginato has written for decades about royals, dynasties, and the modern super-rich, and has proven his skill at getting exclusive interviews and inside access. Growing Up Getty will enthrall readers with insight into this unconventional family that has never been available before.

James Reginato has been a leading journalist for the past two decades. In 2016, Reginato published his first book, Great Houses, Modern Aristocrats (Rizzoli Books), a uniquely intimate and lively look at some of Great Britain's most historic and majestic houses and the remarkable families who still live inside them. In 2019, he wrote the introduction to John Richardson: At Home (Rizzoli Books).
