GOD IS IN THE CROWD

Tal Keinan

Twenty-First Century Judaism

Part call to action and part riveting personal story, an original proposal for ensuring the survival of Judaism from a pioneering social activist and Harvard MBA business leader who served as a fighter in the Israel Air Force.
This fascinating book is for anyone who cares about the fate of Judaism. A bit of background on the author: Tal Keinan was born to a secular Jewish family and learned little about Judaism until high school when he decided he wanted to know more. A trip to Israel led to his joining the Israeli Defense Forces, where he became the only non-Israeli-born citizen to attain the rank of an elite air force pilot. Keinan is an accomplished writer whose page-turning story of his life in the IDF is extremely candid. He is highly dynamic, charismatic, and an enthralling public speaker.

The impetus behind this book is the author's mission to reverse the diminishing number of religious Jews worldwide. He shares his personal story, which is woven throughout the book, to reveal to us what and why he believes Judaism is worth fighting for. In an interesting and compelling approach, Keinan then turns to Crowd Wisdom to determine what distinguishes Judaism from other religionswhat makes it worth preserving. He offers a number of highly original and practical ideas for moving forward, including the creation of a monetary fund that will invest in the future of Judaism. His original idea of linking Crowd Wisdom to the future of Judaism is one that he feels would provide an actual solution through a fund that will invest in education, social justice, and Jewish identity.

Tal Keinan is co-founder of Clarity Capital. Tal served on the Advisory Board of the Ariav Commission, a Bank of Israel-Finance Ministry task force on creating a global financial center in Israel. Tal is Chairman of Koret Economic Development Funds, Israel's largest small business and micro-lending institution. He serves on the Boards of Directors of the Steinhardt Foundation, Heseg Fund, and Reut Institute. He is a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum. Tal was previously a Partner and Investment Committee Member at Giza Venture Capital. He earned his BA at Georgetown School of Foreign Service and at Tel Aviv University, and his MBA at Harvard Business School.

A meaningful attempt to answer a significant question: How can Judaism survive? ...An impassioned yet well-reasoned and definitively well-written reflection on an imperiled people. A thoughtful and relevant assessment of the current state of Judaism.

Blends social science, economics, religion, and national identity to help us see more clearly who we are as individuals, people, and society.

Beautifully written, brilliantly argued, this part-memoir, part-polemic, and part-blueprint for the Jewish future is a unique contribution to the Jewish conversation. Few have lived both the American Jewish and Israeli experiences as intensively as Tal Keinan; few have earned the right, as he has, to help us navigate our destiny as a people. For anyone concerned with Jewish continuity, this is must reading.

Part memoir and part manifesto for the way forward, this is a must read for anyone interested in how we have come to this impasse and how we will move beyond it.

Few American Jews who move to Israel go as native as Tal Keinan. Having drawn heavily on his love of the Jewish state and his remarkable analytical skills to become an elite among elites, a fighter pilot in the Israel Defense Forces, Keinan now applies the same love and intelligence to the two biggest questions facing the tiny nation: What has it become, and what will become of it? As a pilot, Keinan sometimes had to fly blind through storms to catch sight of the ground. As a thinker, Keinan is equally audacious. We need his astute readings of Israel's current position and his unexpected glimpses of a possible future to make our way through these murky times.

Keinan offers a uniquely modern vision of community as framework for identity, a timely challenge to the contemporary ethic of individualism. This is an important book, and not just for Jewish readers.

American, Israeli, entrepreneur, fighter pilot, and investor: Keinan's diagnosis of Israel and the Jewish Diaspora is provided through the lens of a gripping life story. And his analysis of Jewish continuity is sobering. In God Is in the Crowd, Keinan offers a path forward for the Jewish future. Keinan's contribution is indispensable to the debate about the future of the Jewish people.

If you have been on Birthright, read this book. If you are a young person struggling to determine whether or how to engage with your heritage, read this book. In an age when communal identities threaten to divide us, Tal Keinan offers a compelling model for celebrating our diversity. God Is in the Crowd is also a thrilling story. Start reading and you will find it difficult to stop.

Tal Keinan has written an extraordinarily powerful work on Jewish identity in the 21st century. Enthralling, searching, profound and compellingly written, it should be read by everyone concerned about the Jewish future.
