GLI ULTIMI AMERICANI

Arianna Farinelli

The stories of the last Americans never start in New York: they always start somewhere else, in remote times and places.
Gli ultimi americani tells the stories of Alma, Lola and the Writer; the atmospheres of a South American hacienda are combined with the Colombian political history of the last century and a love-friendship triangle with a unique style and narrative structure. A powerful love triangle that explores the contradictions of the American dream and society and tells us what it means to belong to a place and to a history. Who are the Last Americans today? What culture do they belong to? Have they become part of this country? Where exactly is their home? Is there a place where they wish to return, grow old and die? Is there a place where there isn't just strife and war awaiting them? The Last Americans are somehow still on the road, unable to reach their destination and confused about what and where their true home really is, about whether they belong where they are born or where they die. Alma, Lola and the writer are telling the past and the future of the new American mythology. Arianna Farinelli was born in Rome in 1975 and has been living in the US since 2001. She completed a PhD in Political Science in 2010 and is lecturer at Baruch College, City University of New York. Her first novel, Gotico Americano (Bompiani) was published in 2020 and is being translated in Dutch, German, Spanish and Japanese.

Farinelli reveals a ruthless truth. That America is a circle of hell that promises paradise to all. So long as they are willing to let themselves be burned in the fire.
