GERALDINE PU AND HER LUNCH BOX

Maggie P. Chang

Meet spunky, funny, and friendly Geraldine Pu as she takes on a bully and makes a new friend in this first book in a new Level 3 Ready-to-Read Graphics series!
In the first book of the series, Geraldine Pu (and Her Lunchbox, Too), Geraldine cannot wait to see what scrumptious lunch her grandma has made for her. But her favorite part of the school day takes a dramatic turn when new kid Nico reveals his shocking opinion: he thinks her lunch is GROSS! So begins a frustrating, funny, and exceptionally stinky tale of how Geraldine learns to embrace her heritage through food, take a stand in the face of bullies, and bring others together through kindness and openness. As told through the perspective of her beloved, trusty lunchbox Biendong ("Bee-in-dong"), this story's narrator uses wit and charm to share how life can get horribly, hilariously messy before we get it right. With 33 pages of illustrations by the author, this gentle and funny series introduces kids to Geraldine's family, her favorite foods, and words in Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese, along with recipes to try. Other books in the series tackle topics from family ancestry to hair and bring back lovable characters such as Geraldine's grandma, classmates, and of course, her quirky, narrating belongings. Ready-to-Read Graphics books give readers the perfect introduction to the graphic novel format with easy-to-follow panels, speech bubbles with accessible vocabulary, and sequential storytelling that is spot-on for beginning readers. There's even a how-to guide for reading graphic novels at the beginning of each book. Maggie P. Chang grew up in Kansas, where she constantly had her nose in a book and art supplies close by. She began her career in art education, but after teaching the most fabulous and talented teens at LaGuardia Arts High School (a.k.a. the Fame school), she was inspired to follow her own passion for children's books. This Taiwanese American is the author-illustrator of the Geraldine Pu series and is also the cofounder of two education nonprofits. Maggie lives in California with her husband, their daughter, and their dog, Benihana.
