FREEDOM IS A LAND I CANNOT SEE

Peter Cunningham

1924. In the dangerous first years of the Irish Free State, beautiful Rose Raven, having lost her sight and her first love, is living quietly with her brother. But Ultan is involved in anti-government propaganda. After his death, Rose is the only person who knows where the shameful truth is hidden – a truth so incendiary, it threatens the new Ireland itself.

Peter Cunningham is from Waterford, Ireland's oldest city. His novel The Taoiseach was a controversial best seller; The Sea and the Silence won the prestigious Prix de l'Europe. Acts of Allegiance was nominated for the Dublin International Literary Award. In 2017 Cunningham was a nominee for the Laureate for Irish Fiction. He is a member of Aosdána, the Irish academy of arts and letters.

Comments

"Its elegiac and measured metre makes its tragic conclusion all the more stunning."

"This elegant novel continues to surprise and beguile throughout, its magic unceasing until the stunning denouement." — Patrick McCabe "This gripping novel is an act of reclamation of buried lives and a livid portrait of a young woman courageously trying to make sense of a society that contains no place for her." — Dermot Bolger "Freedom Is a Land I Cannot See is an intriguing, satisfying and beautiful novel about love, loss, truth and courage." — Ciarán Collins "Love, war, loyalty, rebellion, sacrifice, passion, honor, and pain: It's all here, meted out across a heartbreaking story. This is a masterful novel that – like Rose – will never leave you." — Julia Keller
