An eccentric, solitary old wizard, Hugo prefers to be alone. He spends his days practicing ancient spells, enchanting his furniture to be alive, and feuding with his next-door neighbor over property lines... until the wizard council orders him to take on an apprentice or have his license revoked. He’s not sure what to make of his new apprentice, Ivy—she’s sarcastic, withdrawn, and seems entirely disinterested in magic.

But Ivy’s got a secret: she’s a medium, and she appears to be channeling a malicious spirit named Nightshade who acts as her alter-ego. Nightshade is unpredictable, uncontrollable, and a real jerk to boot, but she does have her uses. When Ivy lets Nightshade take control, she has access to powers that mere humans could only dream of—she’s fast, she’s strong, she’s confident, and she can even fly and spit green fire. Not a bad trade-off, right? Ivy doesn’t think so. She wants Nightshade gone, and she wants Hugo to help her do it. With some help from the next-door neighbors: Zan, a fearsome disgraced paladin, and her apprentice Brambles, a happy-go-lucky young druid raised by Tree-Monks, what could go wrong? But when Ivy becomes aware of a plot to destroy their idyllic magical world, she must seek the help of her new friends—including a mysterious traveling healer named Becky and maybe, just maybe, a little help from Nightshade. Noelle Stevenson is an multi-Eisner Award-winning cartoonist and writer. Her debut graphic novel “Nimona” won the Slate Cartoonist’s Studio Prize, was nominated for a Harvey Award, was a New York Times Notable Book, and was the youngest finalist for the National Book Award. She is also the cowriter of the Eisner-winning comic series “Lumberjanes” and has written for Disney’s “Wander Over Yonder,” Marvel, and DC Comics, among others. Todd Casey is currently the Story Editor for Disney XD’s Future-Worm and his first theatrical feature, Krampus, was released in December from Legendary and Universal Pictures. He has written, developed, and produced animated series and features for Cartoon Network, Disney, Nickelodeon, Warner Brothers, and Marvel Animation.
