FOREVER FOR A YEAR

Brad Gottfred

A gut-wrenchingly real, strikingly up close and personal, universal story of two teens falling in love for the first time, told in their own distinct alternating voices.
Carolina is absolutely, positively ready to start high school... until the father she hates tries to crawl back into her life, and her best friend decides that being popular is more important than being Carolina’s friend. And Trevor, starting his freshman year for the second time in a second city after his mother's suicide attempt, wishes everyone (save his little sister) would go f-ck themselves.

When Carolina and Trevor meet on their first day of school, something both cosmic and irrational draws them to each other. They fight it—both too terrified to put their hearts on the line—until the first big party of the year draws Carolina out of her geek shell, Trevor away from his popularity prison, and both into their own private universe. Carolina and Trevor share first kisses, first touches, first sexual leaps. When they’re together, nothing and no one else matters. They trust—they know deep down—that they will have each other forever.

But then, little by little, that newness of first love starts to fade. Outside circumstances begin to creep into their relationship. One of them will make a choice, the other a mistake, that will break what they thought was unbreakable. Both will wish that they could fall in love again for the first time... but first love, by definition, can’t happen twice.

Thrilling yet cautionary, FOREVER FOR A YEAR is truly addictive reading. Brad has an uncanny ability to get inside of teens' heads with Carolina’s and Trevor’s alternating passages—their contrasting ways of verbalizing and processing the same shared experiences. Readers witness firsthand the heady exhilaration of their powerful new sense of intimacy, so gripping and raw and relatable. But we also witness the pitfalls and the dangers of falling in love so young—the all-consuming obsession that blurs judgment and skews priorities. There is an immediacy to the writing that hits the exact right tone. Earnest but entirely unpretentious, Brad’s narrative reads like a stream of consciousness that makes us as readers feel like we’re the ones falling in love for the first time. FOREVER FOR A YEAR strips a new relationship down and lays all of the pieces bare for dissection. There is depth and weight—and consequence.

B. T. Gottfred has given us an at times painfully realistic portrait of young love, warts and all.

A swoon-inducing and heartbreaking novel for most YA collections.

Gottfred is plainly a talent to watch. Both emotionally satisfying and sure to be much discussed.

“Debut author Gottfred’s accomplishments here are the truly realistic teen voices and the believable trajectory and fate of the relationship; readers won’t be surprised when the “soulmates” hit rough patches (though some of the subplots do contain surprises)...A touching, relatable, and highly appealing coming-of-age romance à la Eleanor & Park...

Gottfred’s characters actually sound, think, and act like real people, not the polished, best versions of themselves. Readers will need hearts of steel not to fall for this love story and its two storytellers.
