FINE

Rhea Ewing

Fine is an oral history in comics that explores the lived experience of gender in America today, woven together with Rhea Ewing's own story of eventually coming out as non-binary.
There are over 1.4 million Americans who openly identify as trans, and that's not counting the many who are in the closet or still questioning. Rhea Ewing grew up in a small town in rural America, and they wanted to create this book for the many young people living in isolated pockets of America who feel confused about their gender identity. We are at a transitional moment in the way we as a culture talk and think about gender. Fine will serve as a guide for anyone hoping to better understand why we are where we are, or the experiences of those friends and loved ones and neighbors who don't easily fit into our, until now, binary understanding of gender.

About the Author
Rhea Ewing is a young, non-binary comics creator, a graduate of UW Madison's fine art program, who spent the last six years interviewing dozens of transgender and cisgender folks—cutting across race and class—to learn about their experiences of gender and gender nonconformity. Rhea wanted to understand the lives and experiences of America's most marginalized while also on a journey to understand their own identity.

"In Ewing's ambitious debut, they conduct and draw dozens of interviews over a decade to chart the murky waters of gender....This thought-provoking work will appeal to those seeking a robust, personal exploration of how gender shapes lives."

"In their debut book, Ewing offers a timely, educative, and vividly rendered illustrated portrait. . . The author deftly assembles the most resonant responses, showing the participants generously discussing how gender is interconnected with race, culture, and sexuality; how it moves far beyond conventional masculine and feminine designations; and how embracing fluidity can be liberating and transformative regardless of social norms of appearance and behavior, many of which are constrictive and damaging. . . Ewing presents a uniquely straightforward, unembellished amalgam of narrative and illustration, smoothly braided with their own personal journey. ... A vital, richly textured resource for anyone seeking a better understanding of gender identity."

"[A] wondrous tapestry of personal reflections and meditations on how people view subjects like gender, masculinity, femininity, and community . . . Ewing's art beautifully reflects the individuality and wishes of their subjects . . . Recommended for everyone who cares about better understanding the complicated, varied, gorgeous mess that is gender."
