FIFTY IN REVERSE
A fun and quirky novel from TV personality and radio host Bill Flanagan about how even sixty-five-year-olds are still kids at heart.
Peter Wyatt, a 65-year old man goes to sleep in his home one day and then wakes up in 1970 as a fifteen-year-old teenager. Harvard psychologist Terry Canyon meets Peter when he is suspended from school for stripping off his clothes in Algebra class. When Terry asks Peter why he did it, the boy explains that he was trying to "shock myself awake." Peter tells him he's actually 65 and living in the year 2020 and doesn't understand why it's 1970 and he's back in the ninth grade. Doctor Canyon commits to either curing Peter of his delusion or helping him return to his world.
But in the meantime, the novel hilariously depicts Peter's attempts to fit in as a teenager and cope with the tedium, foolishness, and sexual temptations of high school even as he tries to retain the sense of himself as a sixty-five-year-old man.
Bill Flanagan is a frequent video essayist for CBS' "Sunday Morning." His appearances focus on looking back at cultural and music history milestones, as well as his views on contemporary culture as a Boomer. Bill also hosts multiple shows on Sirius radio, looking back at music history - a public platform that has developed prominently since his previous books. Those platforms, and their tie-in to themes in this book, give him frequent opportunities to tie non-fiction discussions into this fiction title.
