EVERY BREATH

Ellie Marney

What if Sherlock Holmes was the boy next door? A smart, sexy thriller for teenagers.
Rachel Watts is a country girl whose family has been forced to move to the city after the banks have foreclosed on their farm. James Mycroft is an eccentric English boy, obsessed with foren- sic techniques and determined to solve the riddle of his parent’s deaths. In a dark corner be- side the city zoo, a brutal murder brings these two high-school kids closer than ever before. But this is no cozy mystery - roof monkeys, mental hospitals, zoo employees... it’s all tied together in a web of blood and insanity. And the clock is ticking - someone else is about to die. But for Rachel, the most intriguing and dangerous mystery, may be Mycroft himself and she’s having a hard time resisting his advances. Ellie Marney is a high school teacher whose adult short stories have won a number of awards, including the 2010 Scarlet Stiletto Award, run by Sisters in Crime. A well-paced murder mystery involving a boy with a past, a country girl who hates being in town, two culturally diverse refugee teens and a down-and-out with his throat cut. A clever, insightful exploration of homelessness and identity--and a darned good yarn." -- 50 best children's books 2013.

. . . Rather than Holmes and Watson we get Mycroft and Watts. . . . As they are pulled deeper into the mysteries surrounding Dave's murder, they also discover a growing attraction to each other, so like all good stories about death it's about love too. Mycroft and Watts are fast-talking, flawed, bright characters. The writing is pacy and engaging but doesn't shy away from darkness.

Quirky and real, fast-paced and full of great characters… I was hooked from the first page.
