DIRT+WATER=MUD

Katherine Hannigan

This is a story about the ups and downs of friendship and all that comes with it, including sharing, compromising, and caring. It is a book about math concepts, friendship, and imaginative play, and is told entirely in equations.
What happens when you combine dirt and water? Mud! What do you get when you take a sheet, a flowerpot, and a stick and add them together? You transform into Her Majesty, the queen!

A young girl and her dog spend the day playing in her backyard, where with her imagination – and a few helpful props – anything can happen. A cape and a strong breeze turn the treehouse into an airplane. A sheet, a stick, and a pair of well-placed cat’s ears turn the girl into a pirate! At least, until mutiny leaves her alone in her kiddie pool . . . surrounded by sharks!

Katherine Hannigan has undergraduate degrees in education and secondary mathematics, and painting. Her graduate degree is in studio art. She is the author of Ida B, Emmaline and the Bunny, True (Sort Of...), and Gwendolyn Grace. Ida B was a New York Times and Book Sense bestseller, a Parents’ Choice Gold Award winner, and it appeared on more than thirty state award lists. She lives in Iowa with a bunch of cats and the occasional bunny or bird visitor.
