DEARLY, DEPARTED
A Zombie Novel
Lia Habel's DEARLY, DEPARTED is a debut post-apocalyptic neo-Victorian steampunk YA zombie novel that puts the zombie genre up onto a broader canvas with a cleverly realized future world, brilliant action and adventure, and a surprisingly tender and poignant love story that brings together a zombie boy and a living girl.
From the ruins of a cataclysmic ice-age, a new society has emerged, built on Victorian customs and morality. "New Victorian" Nora Dearly, a confident teenage girl and apparent orphan, leaves school for the holidays to return home - only to be dragged into the night by the living dead. Luckily for her, though, the good living dead got to her first. From her reanimated rescuers she learns not only that zombies are roaming the countryside, but that her deceased father is one - and that he's in terrible trouble. She also meets Bram Griswold, a noble and rather sweet undead boy for whom she starts to fall.
Meanwhile, Nora's best friend, insecure Pamela Roe, is just trying to carry on with life as best she can in the wake of Nora's disappearance. When she's confronted by - and forced to kill -- an evil zombie in self-defense, Pam is galvanized into action, and ends up leading a group of survivors as the city of New London is thronged by the ravenous dead. Upon hearing of Pamela's plight, Nora and Bram set out to rescue her friend, find her missing father, and maybe just save what's left of the world.
