On a country walk, DI Meg Dalton witnesses a young girl fighting viciously against a bully, leaving him injured. Meg goes against protocol and decides not to report the incident. A few weeks later, a man is found stabbed to death in his own bed. Lying beside him, apparently asleep, is his ten year old daughter. She's covered in blood and is clutching the carving knife that killed her father. When Meg arrives at the scene, she's horrified to discover it's the same girl.

The girl claims to remember nothing, but her mother is convinced the girl is possessed. Since a heart transplant a few months earlier, the girl has been sleepwalking and screaming that her family are trying to murder her. Her mother's convinced the girl remembers the violent death of her heart donor, but that child's identity has been kept secret. Can a heart hold memories or emotions? Meg's investigation leads her down a chilling path. The girl's therapist hanged himself a week earlier. And when Meg finds the donor child's details, they back up the mother's theory.
