DAUGHTERS OF THE DEER
For readers of Katherena Vermette's The Break and The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill.
DAUGHTERS OF THE DEER is a family story which centers on the marriage between Marie, our protagonist, an Algonkin woman from the Weskarini Deer Clan, and Pierre, a French settler from Cognac, France. Together they have many children and grandchildren, but their lives and those of future generations will forever be impacted by the story of their first born, two-spirited daughter, Jeanne.
There has been very little written about the Indigenous women's experience at the onset of colonization. Danielle Daniel's novel DAUGHTERS OF THE DEER will help shine a light into the past and create an essential link to our present-day crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Danielle Daniel is a Métis award-winning children's book author and illustrator. DAUGHTERS OF THE DEER is her first novel. Her memoir The Dependent was a finalist for a 2017 Northern Lit Award. Her multiple award winning picture books include Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox and You Hold Me Up. She has a forthcoming middle grade fiction novel with HarperCollins in 2021 and she is at work on her next adult novel, loosely linked to DAUGHTERS OF THE DEER.
