CLAIRBOYANCE

Kristiana Kahakauwila

Freaky Friday meets 11 Before 12 in Clairboyance, a speculative middle grade novel which follows Clara, whose life is suddenly turns upside down once she discovers that she has boy-specific ESP abilities. Perfect for fans of Lisa Graff and Natalie Lloyd!
WISHFULFILLMENT WITH RICH THEMES
Who hasn't wanted to know what other people are thinking? Clara gets to live that out to the max, attempting to fix her mistakes and navigating the difficulties of middle school like making new friends.

AN UNDERREPRESENTED VOICE
Tiana taps into her Native Hawaiian heritage and brings readers a fun story with a Native Hawaiian main character, shining a light on an underrepresented identity.

WHAT MAKES A HOME
Clara feels like she has one foot in Hawai'i and one foot in Arizona. Feelings of not quite fitting in and putting down roots will resonate with middle grade readers who are exploring the same things.

NON-TRADITIONAL FAMILY DYNAMICS
Clairboyance explores a non-traditional family household, as Clara is raised by her grandmother. While also touching upon the experience of being a child of divorce, as well as a parent remarrying, Tiana shows that families can take many different forms and are just as full of love.

Kristiana Kahakauwila is an award-winning writer of kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiian), Norwegian, and German descent. An associate professor at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, she teaches creative writing both there and at the Institute of American Indian Arts. Clairboyance is her first book for young readers.
