BESTIARY
Introducing a startling new talent, 20-year-old novelist Kristin Chang, whose debut THE BESTIARY OF THE UNBORN creates with untempered energy a new blueprint for fiction.
Loosely based on Kristin's family history, BESTIARY OF THE UNBORN is an unraveling of a complex Taiwanese immigrant family coming to terms with issues ranging from undocumented status, the forced conversion to Christianity by missionaries in Taiwan, the possibilities buried in unnamed fluctuating sexualities, and the obsession with/rebellion against Confucian familial piety. Unsettling retellings of classic Taiwanese mythology are woven through the stories as well.
Kristin's poetry and prose has been published in places like the Pushcart Prize anthology, Apogee, The Margins (Asian American Writers Workshop), and the Nashville Review. Her poetry has been nominated multiple times for Best of the Net and Best New Poets, and has been anthologized in Better American Poetry Vol. 3 and Ink Knows No Borders (Seven Stories Press). In October, Black Lawrence Press published her poetry chapbook to instant acclaim, and she has a full-length poetry manuscript ready as well. She's currently a junior at Sarah Lawrence College.
