BENGHAZI-BERGEN-BELSEN
Benghazi Bergen-Belsen is the first novel written in Hebrew and most likely in any language to unfold the story of the Holocaust of the North African Jews.
Benghazi Bergen-Belsen is the first novel written in Hebrew and most likely in any language to unfold the story of the Holocaust of the North African Jews. This chapter of history, which has remained unknown to many around the globe, is revealed fully and accurately in this powerfully written novel, based on profoundly detailed historical research. The book depicts the transformations and tribulations undergone by Libya in general, and its Jews in particular, during the Second World War, starting with the Italian rule of Benghazi, the capital of Cyrenaica, before 1939, through the British occupation of Benghazi in 1940, the German-Italian occupation of Libya in 1941 and the British reoccupation at the end of the same year, and finally the Nazi reoccupation of Libya in 1942. Benghazi Bergen-Belsen does not only retrieve from oblivion a forgotten chapter of history, but also places at its center a universal character of a woman who is forced to cope with the terrors of a cruel and arbitrary humanity, and in spite of everything, prevails. In this regard, this book is not a lament about the loss of mankind's way, but a song of praise to man's hidden strengths.
