BEFORE IT BEGINS

Kellyann Niotis

An Evidence-Based Guide to Preventing Alzheimer's Parkinson's, and Other Neurological Diseases

As the world's first fellowship-trained preventive neurologist, the author's groundbreaking work is shaping how we understand and protect the brain. In her book, she offers a compelling blend of cutting-edge research, practical guidance, and a deeply empowering message.
A leading researcher in early detection and risk reduction for neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), Dr. Niotis has helped uncover how intensive lifestyle interventions like diet, exercise, and cognitive strategies can halt, and even reverse, early Alzheimer's symptoms. Her expertise is urgently relevant: dementia already effects more than 55 million people worldwide, a number projected to triple by 2050, while Parkinson's continues to rise at alarming rates. BEFORE IT BEGINS argues that just as we've embraced preventive cardiology, we must now adopt preventive neurology. Since the triggers of NDDs begin up to 30 years before symptoms appear, Dr. Niotis empowers readers to act during this critical window, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to protect brain health long

Kellyann Niotis managed the country's first Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medical College/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where she developed research programs for Parkinson's Disease and Lewy-Body Dementia prevention. She went on to lead the preventive neurology program within Dr. Peter Attia's longevity medical practice, Early Medical. She currently runs a private practice specializing in preventive neurology and serves as Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine. She is also the Director of Parkinson's and Lewy Body Dementia Prevention Research at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND). Dr. Niotis' research at IND focuses on early detection and personalized risk reduction interventions for people at risk for NDDs.

Dr. Niotis's work has been published in many notable medical journals (including Neurology, Nature Mental Health, Frontiers of Aging, Neuroscience, Aging and Disease, Movement Disorders, the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, Alzheimer's & Dementia, and the Journal of the Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease), and she has presented at national and international conferences. She has spoken on podcasts such as Peter Attia's The Drive, Simon Hill's The Proof, She MD; at events such as SXSW; and at global corporations, including Kirkland & Ellis and Google. Her opinions have been featured on media outlets, including CNN and National Geographic. Dr. Niotis lives in Larchmont, New York, with her husband.
