BEAUTIFUL MESS

Claire Christian

Winner of the 2016 Text Prize for Young Adult and Children's Writing

Since her best friend Kelly committed suicide, things haven't been going so well for sixteen-year-old Ava. Even before she loses her temper and gets thrown out of school for shouting at the principal, there's the simmering rage and the getting drunk (and the strange angry sex with Kelly's brother). The only thing going right for Ava is her weekend job at Magic Kebab.

That's where she meets Gideon. Skinny, shy Gideon. Who is not just a poet and a collector of vinyl records and weirdly opposed to social media. He also turns out to be the only person who can help Ava navigate her pain and her anger - if she'll let him.

BEAUTIFUL MESS is a raw, gutsy, painfully funny take on grief, depression, and first love.
