As If By Magic

Maria Papayanni

Young Eva grows up in a home like no other: a small jungle in the grey heart of the city. Her mum, Madalena, is like no other mum, either. Eva’s dog is like no other dog, either. Si Do wanders the streets all day and goes in and out of the house at all times banging the doors. Eva wonders why Si Do is not like normal dogs that wait patiently to be taken for a walk on a leash. Then again, the world would be very boring, if it were full of normal people and normal dogs.

Madalena teaches her daughter to punish nasty people using Counter-wishes. Sometimes, as if by magic, Counter-wishes work. But sometimes something more is required: to conquer one’s fears, to choose the right friends, to dare the impossible. And it is then that the great adventure begins. Small or great battles, they are always worth the trouble. Eva grows up learning to believe in miracles and realizing that different people are useful in helping us to see life in different colours. But then, why isn’t everything as it should be? Well, perhaps, because miracles are not the same for everybody.

n the age of speed and noise, sometimes we forget to listen. Or maybe we have lost the ability to appreciate the small miracles of daily life. But Madalena loves nature, speaks to animals and to her flowers, and believes in fairy tales. Is this the reason why strange things keep happening to her? Maybe she’s simply a witch... Is it the case that you must believe in miracles in order to see them? And what is a miracle anyway? A growing flower, a wondering child, waves on the beach, sunset, a walk in the country – do these qualify as miracles?
