AN UNLIKELY WARRIOR

Georg Rauch

A Jewish Soldier in Hitler's Army

Georg Rauch, who passed away in 2006, was 18, part Jewish, and living in Austria when he was drafted into the Fuehrer's army in 1943. Georg is a gifted writer and his wife is a wonderful translator. Working in concert, the two of them have made Georg's story about his experiences during this terrible time a breathtaking adventure, as exciting as it is distressing, filled with telling detail and offering a wholly unique perspective on the plight of Jewish Austrians during the war and on the life of the common German soldier trapped in the trenches. His narrative is filled with humility, humor, and candor. As the primary agent said so eloquently, AN UNLIKELY WARRIOR is an "indelible portrait of a reluctant soldier's battle for survival."
