AN AMERICAN FAMILY
A Memoir of Hope and Sacrifice
In July 2016, Khizr Khan, a Pakistani-American Gold Star father, gave an electrifying speech at the Democratic National Convention. Now, in this memoir, Khan, with contributions from his wife, Ghazala, traces the Khans’ journey from Pakistan to America—from humble beginnings on a poultry farm in Pakistan, to Harvard Law School and a life of upward mobility in America—showing what it means to leave the worst of one’s country behind for the best of another.
From Khizr Khan:
"I still remember so clearly first falling in love with the US Constitution and The Declaration of Independence, and what they promised. In this book, I hope to share our experience coming and living here as a family. It is a sincere effort to honor the countless requests we continue to receive to tell a complete story of our journey and to detail the American values of which we have spoken. We are grateful for the opportunity to so proudly share with our American friends, regardless of political affiliation, and the rest of the World, our continued faith and belief in the innate goodness of America, even in these challenging times."
In AN AMERICAN FAMILY, the author reveals a rich history of families that run deep and the He also tells the story of the Khans' middle child, U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed while protecting his base camp in Iraq, and the ways in which their undying pride in him and his sacrifice have helped them endure the deepest despair a parent can know.
Khizr Khan was born in 1950, the eldest of ten children, to poultry farming parents in Gujranwala, a city in rural Pakistan. He moved to the United States with his wife Ghazala in 1980. The couple became American citizens in 1986, and raised their three sons in Silver Lake, Maryland. His middle son, Captain Humayun Khan, was killed in 2004 in a suicide attack near Baqubah, Iraq, and was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Khizr works as a legal consultant, and is involved with the University of Virginia's ROTC program.
Since the convention, the Khans have been speaking across the country and have become symbols of sacrifice, patriotism, and courage. Despite countless media requests they have been saving most of their post-election commentary to promote this book. We know this book will inspire and we hope you’ll be interested in publishing it along with us.
