ALWAYS ANOTHER COUNTRY
If I were given five minutes with my younger selfthat little girl who cried every time we had to leave for another countryI would hold her tight and not say a word. I would just be still and have her feel my beating heart, a thud to echo her owna silent message that, no matter the outcome, she would survive and be stronger and happier than she might think as she stood at the threshold of each new home.
Insightful, angry, hopeful, Sisonke Msimang is a strong new voice, in the tradition of Arundathi Roy and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. A bestseller in South Africa, ALWAYS ANOTHER COUNTRY, will be
published in the UK, US and Australia in 2018, and Sisonke will be doing events in each market.
The child of prominent political exiles during South Africa's apartheid era, Sisonke Msimang was born in Swaziland and raised in Zambia, Kenya and Canada. She writes vividly about these times, her college years in the US, and her family's return to South Africa after Mandela's release in the 1990s.
Moving and relevant, ALWAYS ANOTHER COUNTRY is sometimes as much generous manifesto as memoir, following the journey of a girl becoming a woman, a feminist, a campaigner, a mother and a writer. This powerful and beautiful memoir is a chronicle of a coming of age, both for a woman and a young democracy.
