Think Allie Carter’s HEIST SOCIETY with the flirty, poppy fun of something like NICK + NORA’S INFINITE PLAYLIST, by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan. A clever and funny read, with the perfect dash of romance.
Being a 16-year-old safecracker and active-duty daughter of international spies has its moments, good and bad. Pros: Seeing the world one crime-solving adventure at a time. Having parents with super cool jobs. Cons: Never staying in one place long enough to have friends or a boyfriend. But for Maggie Silver, the biggest perk of all has been avoiding high school and the accompanying cliques, bad lunches, and frustratingly simple locker combinations. Then Maggie and her parents are sent to New York for her first solo assignment, and all of that changes. She'll need to attend a private school, avoid the temptation to hack the school's security system, and befriend one aggravatingly cute Jesse Oliver to gain the essential information she needs to crack the case . . . all while trying not to blow her cover.

Robin Benway is the acclaimed author of Audrey, Wait! (Razorbill, 2008) and The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May & June (Razorbill, 2010). Audrey, Wait! was a 2009 ALA Best Book for Young Adults, a finalist for a Cybil Award, and a BCCB blue ribbon winner, amongst other honors. The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May & June was a 2010 ALA Best Book for Young Adults, and has been optioned to NBC Universal for a TV series. Benway's books have been published in 16 languages, won awards abroad, and been bestsellers in several countries. Formerly a bookseller and book publicist, she lives in Los Angeles.

Note this will likely be the first book in a series called the "AKA series", but Bloomsbury hasn't decided yet. Likely changes to be made: 1. Right now the Collective focuses on corporate corruption, but that will change to something more appealing to teens. 2. As Robin writes she's going to make sure it feels totally fresh and with LOTS of plot twits. 3. Robin will focus more on Maggie's "fish out of water" experience as a teenage spy.

Comments

Robin Benway perfectly balances descriptions of apy activities with the normal life of a teenage girl, making this a truly enjoyable read.

Benway's three-dimensional characters leap off the page. She captures the trials and tribulations of growing up with wit and whimsy, humor and perceptioon - making this novel a real joy.

Benway offers a rollicking take on the "spy kids" premise, buoyed by fun characters. Readers will be sufficiently ivested to see the mission through to completion.
