A TONIC OF WILDERNESS

Kate Hohl

This dark crime noir adheres to the "Private Eye" conventions balancing the fantasy element of a world dominated by talking animals.
Depleted by years of pandemics and weakened by their reliance on virtual societies, the surviving members of the human race are sitting ducks when the animals take over.

Dana Freeman, a disgraced ex-cop, ekes out a precarious living, tracking down deadbeat dads and bail skips. Desperate to survive in this upside-down reality where animals hold all the power and humans are second-class citizens, she jumps on an opportunity to investigate a murder case for the animals.

Filled with flawed and complex characters both human and animal with a bonkers plot that is unleashed out of the gate, Kate Hohl's first novel takes readers into a world where -through a dark series of events- a menagerie of animals talk, walk and have surpassed humans in the food chain.

The novel will appeal to fans of Matt Haig's The Humans and Jeff Vandermeer.

Orwell's Animal Farm meets Chandler's Mean Streets. A strange but seductive story, different from anything you'll have read before.
