The Gila River and Wilderness is the heart and soul of A Song for the River. Every summer since 2002, Connors has been perched in a tower 70 feet above the Gila Wilderness watching for fire. His first book, Fire Season (30,000 sold), documents the deep lessons learned about mountains, wilderness, river, fire, and solitude. A Song for the River, its sequel, is a deeply personal book: the mountain he loves goes up in flames; a man, the lookout on another mountain, he has come to love as brother and father dies in a freak accident; and three high school students, friends of his, die tragically in an airplane crash while researching the wilderness and the wild river they wish to save. Amid these tragedies, a woman- a reporter on assignment - walks up the trail to find him and they fall in love.

An epilogue inspires to create the understanding and political will to protect the Gila River and Wilderness. They must not perish.
