THE 2084 REPORT
AN ORAL HISTORY OF THE GREAT WARMING
Do you want to know what the world will look like to your aged children and their children? Huxley and Orwell peered into the future for their eras and saw much that has come to pass. Scientist James Powell has now done the same for us. 2084 looks back at a world that failed to act in time.
Powell, a geologist and retired college president, has written a series of imagined interviews with scientists and ordinary individuals across the globe, conducted by a historian in 2084. These interviews chronicle the way that the planet has been devastated by climate change. Stories of fire, floods, drought, food shortages, war and extinction. It's horrifying and it's all based in real science.
...two comments by sixteen-year-old Greta Thunberg, spoken to British MPs April 23, 2019:
"Avoiding climate breakdown will require cathedral thinking. We must lay the foundation while we may not know exactly how to build the ceiling . . . Did you hear what I just said? Is my English OK? Is the microphone on? Because I'm beginning to wonder."
James Powell has Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He chaired the geology department at Oberlin College and was later Acting President of Oberlin, President of Franklin and Marshall College, President of Reed College, President of the Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia, and President and Director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. Powell served 12 years on the National Science Board and is currently the executive director of National Physical Science Consortium. He is the author of Four Revolutions in the Earth Sciences (Columbia University Press).
