Poet of Fear - A Biography

Rainer Maria Rilke is widely regarded as one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. His art consisted in ‘making things out of fear’, as he wrote in July 1903 to his former lover Lou Andreas-Salomé. In his new biography, which looks at Rilke’s life and his work in equal measure, Manfred Koch depicts Rilke as a highly sensitive depth sounder and the most gender-fluid poet of the emerging modern age. He gives us a fascinating account of a radical life, depicting Rilke as a man who wanted to literally embody art. He developed a sensibility and perceptiveness bringing him into alarming proximity with the abysses in himself and his era.

The stages in Rainer Maria Rilke’s life are also landmarks in his work: Prague, Russia, Worpswede, Paris, Munich, Duino, Spain, Switzerland. Manfred Koch’s brilliantly written biography portrays these stages as stations on a creative Way of the Cross, undertaken by a man who was both physically and mentally fragile, and combines an examination of Rilke’s life with exemplary, accessible interpretations of his work. The writer of the Duino Elegies emerges as an expert scrounger, a man who cast his spell over women and artistic patrons alike, and who was pretentious to the point of being unbearable, but who did all of this – living his whole life, in fact – in service of the one thing that truly mattered to him: creating poetry for the ages, and turning life into ‘true’ art. He succeeded, but the price was high – for him and for everyone close to him.
