by Eagar, Kirsty

A searingly honest and achingly funny story about love and sex amid the hotbed of university colleges by the award-winning author of Raw Blue.

Jess Gordon and Mitch Crawford are both studying at the University of Queensland, but that’s all they have in common. Jess and her friends are modern day riot girls. Mitch and his mates are rugby boys, renowned for predatory behavior.

Jess is out for revenge. Last year the jocks from Knights College tried to shame her best friend. This year she and a hand-picked college girl gang are going to get even. The lesson: don't mess with Unity girls. The target: Blondie, a typical Knights stud, arrogant, cold... and smart enough to keep up with Jess.

A neo-riot grrl with a penchant for fanning the flames meets a rugby-playing sexist pig - sworn enemies or two people who happen to find each other when they're at their most vulnerable?

Kirsty Eagar was raised on her mum's central Queensland cattle property, and spent most holidays at the beach with her dad. Her debut novel, Raw Blue, won the 2010 Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Young Adult fiction. Her second novel, Saltwater Vampires, was shortlisted for the NSW Premier's Literary Awards. Her third novel, Night Beach, was shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Awards, the Western Australia Premier's Awards and a Gold Inky. Taking a keen look at modern day intimacy in a hook up culture, Summer Skin expertly shatters notions of slut shaming and the pull of sexual desire. Realistic, modern and moving, the story of Jess and Mitch is as smart as it is hot. Kirsty Eager has written the feminist love story that girls have been waiting for.

Quote: Clementine Ford

Smart, funny and ferociously sexy, Summer Skin delves into the complexities of intimate relationships. With fearless honesty and beautiful prose, Kirsty Eagar explores ideas relating to feminism, power, privacy and porn. Her novel raises critical questions for discussion about the difficulties of connecting in a modern world. Even more compelling, though, is the exploration of what feels ageless – how love and desire make us both vulnerable and strong. A brilliant story, a provoking read - I couldn’t put it down.

Quote: Cath Crowley, Author

It was compulsive reading – funny, romantic, thought-provoking -- Jess and her friends are like fabulous, confident conquistadors exploring the joys, confusions and expectations of love and sex. Summer Skin shines.

Quote: Simmone Howell, Author

Brave and beautiful…I wish there’d been a book like this for me when I was seventeen.

Quote: Karen Foxlee, Author

Kirsty Eagar writes with searing insight into a grey area, giving it brilliant colour … Summer Skin is messy, confronting and highly relatable.

Quote: Emily Gale, Author

Summer Skin is more than a well written romance; it's a great read that might encourage the kinds of discussions that should be had around raunch culture, gender assumptions and the chaotic, confusing, and timeless struggle between the heart and the head.
