by Dr. Hiranmay Saha

While coming down the staircase, a boy goes on counting each step five times. There is a girl who washes her hands with soap two hundred times a day. - An old gentleman who, while walking along the road, touches every lamppost he comes across, as if some mishap will occur if he skips one. - A woman feels like throwing her child away, the moment she takes it on her lap. She stays away from the child due to this fear. - A lady takes bath in a pool for two hours, keeps count and soap thrice and after each soaping, takes thirty-three dips. Ninety-nine dips in three parts. They all are suffering from a disease called OCD, though millions of people suffering from this disabling disease yet they hardly recognize this as an ailment and go for treatment. Physicians most of the cases are not very confident about OCD and its treatability. Dr. Hiranmay Saha an eminent psychiatrist throws light on this less understood subject through this book which took five long years to be completed. The World Health Organisation (WHO) once ranked obsessive compulsive disorder as the tenth most disabling illness of any kind, in terms of lost earnings and diminished quality of life. One report estimated that on an average a person with OCD loses full three years of wages over her/his lifetime. OCD sufferers spend more than nine years searching for treatment and it takes some years more to get the right treatment. Obsessive compulsive disorder is one of the most commonly diagnosed mental disorders, but it is also one of the least understood disorders.
