THE MAN WHO FOUND TIME
James Hutton and the Discovery of the Earth's Antiquity
This is the story of the search for the age of the earth. It is also the story of a moment in history - the Scottish Enlightenment, which brought to Edinburgh the greatest thinkers, from David Hume to Adam Smith, from James Watt to Joseph Priestly to Erasmus Darwin, Charles's grandfather. In their midst was James Hutton, a Scottish gentleman farmer and self-trained geologist whose work helped science to free itself from Biblical creationism, and his discovery of the earth's ancient age directly paved the way for the development of Darwin's theory of evolution.
